Field notes from the first week

We shipped the public beta a week ago and learned a few things in a hurry. The signup conversion was higher than projected, the onboarding drop-off happened earlier than projected, and the rate limiter we had considered over-engineered turned out to be exactly right.

Highlights

The customers who completed the onboarding flow were three times more active than the company we used as our model. The rate limiter absorbed three short traffic spikes without paging anyone.

Lessons

Onboarding is the bottleneck for the next quarter. The product itself is in a fine spot; the funnel into it is what we have to fix.
